The Crew Code

The freshwater surf community is built on mutual respect, shared stoke, and a deep relationship with the water. This code keeps it that way.

01

Stoke is the default.

We're all here because we love surfing the Great Lakes. That's enough common ground. Lead with stoke.

02

Everyone starts somewhere.

First-timers, beginners, and people discovering freshwater surfing are welcome. No gatekeeping. No "go back to shore." The lakes belong to everyone.

03

Respect the spots.

Pack out what you pack in. Share conditions honestly. Don't blow up sensitive spots without community consensus.

04

Keep it real.

Honest session reports, genuine photos, authentic perspectives. No one expects perfection — we expect realness.

05

Build each other up.

Stoke people's sessions. Share knowledge generously. Celebrate someone else's best day.

06

No toxicity.

Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, aggressive localism, harassment, and general toxicity have no place here. One warning. Then you're out.

07

Protect the water.

The Great Lakes are why we're here. Take care of them. Support the organizations and people working to keep our freshwater clean.

A Note on Spots

Some surf spots are locally sensitive. If you're unsure whether to share a spot's name or exact location, ask a local first. We respect the unwritten rules of freshwater surf spots while working to make the culture more welcoming overall.

“The community already exists. It's scattered across group chats, dawn patrol texts, and parking lot conversations. Lake Effect just gives it a home.”
